Join us in Morris dancing in Central New Hampshire!
Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just curious, we invite you to become part of our lively, fun-loving side. We currently meet in Canterbury, NH, bi-weekly on Tuesday evenings @ 6:30pm. Our main style of Morris is Cotswold, specifically Bampton but we also will incorporate other traditions if it suits our fancy!
What is Morris Dancing?
Morris dancing is a traditional English folk dance featuring rhythmic steps, colorful handkerchiefs, and jingling bells. Dancers often incorporate sticks or handkerchiefs, making for an energetic and rather odd looking performance. Rooted in community and celebration, Morris dancing is about more than just the moves—it’s about bringing people together! It originated in about the 1400s from royal court entertainment, and spread to the rural villages of England from there.
Why Morris Dancing?
Morris dancing isn’t just about the steps—it’s about the community. In an age where so much of our time is spent indoors or staring at screens, Morris dancing gives us a chance to connect with others, enjoy the outdoors, and embrace a tradition that’s hundreds of years old-
There’s a special sort of chaotic comradery amongst Morris dancers.
It’s also a great way to stay active, challenge yourself, and make new friends. Plus, it’s always good for a laugh!
