I offer fiddle lessons in flexible 30-minute or 55-minute sessions. For beginners, a 30-minute lesson is typically ample, unless a more in-depth focus is desired. As you or your child progress, we can adjust the lesson duration to suit evolving needs and interests.
Lesson Options:
• In-Home Lessons: I am available to travel to your home (I’m located in Central New Hampshire) for a small mileage fee- just enough to cover my fuel cost.
I have over 6 years of teaching experience in differing capacities, however for fiddling my expertise lies in traditional New England fiddling, enriched with Celtic influences. I play for traditional New England social dances, so most of the tunes I teach are dance-oriented. However, I am more than happy to teach any tune you or your child wish to learn.
For beginners, my focus Includes:
• Proper holding and tuning of the fiddle (Fiddle 101)
• Basic ear training and learning by listening and repetition
• Introduction to basic music theory and elementary note reading
(though this is NOT the primary method for teaching tunes)
• A solid foundation in the history of fiddling in New England
Additionally, I offer practical advice on purchasing instruments and accessories, ensuring you or your child make cost-effective choices, especially for growing children. Traditional music is often passed down by ear, which I emphasize in my teaching, helping you or your child become well-rounded musicians and expand your horizons.
As you or your child progress, I provide resources for public jam sessions and traditional dances to build confidence and enjoyment in playing. I am committed to creating an enjoyable learning experience and fostering independence in my students.
Honesty and Transparency:
If you or your child ever outgrow my instruction or seek a different fiddling tradition, I will gladly refer you to a suitable instructor. I am also open to learning new techniques to better meet your needs.
